How to open radiology images from a CD

You were handed a disc with your X-ray, CT or MRI on it, and now you need to see it or send it to a doctor. Here is what usually works, and what to ask for instead.

On a Windows computer

Insert the disc and open it. Most discs carry a small viewing program: look for a file named like Start, Run or Viewer and open it. The images themselves are in a folder usually called DICOM.

When it does not work

Common reasons, and what to do.

  • No disc drive: most new laptops have none. Ask the center for another way.
  • A Mac or a phone: the viewer on the disc is usually for Windows only.
  • The disc is scratched: ask the center for a new copy.
  • The files open as nonsense: they are DICOM, and need a DICOM viewer.

A better way to receive your images

Ask the imaging center whether it can send a link. With a system such as Bayan, the center sends a link and a code: the report and images open on your phone, and you can pass them to another doctor.

Questions centers ask

Can I open the disc on my phone?

Not directly. A phone has no disc drive, and the files need a DICOM viewer.

Can I send the images to my doctor?

From a disc you would have to copy the whole DICOM folder. A link from the center is simpler, and keeps the full quality.

I run an imaging center. How do I stop burning discs?

With a PACS that shares by link. See how Bayan replaces discs.
