PACS vs RIS: what each one does

A RIS, a radiology information system, manages orders, scheduling, billing and the report as a record. A PACS, a picture archiving and communication system, stores the images and shows them to the radiologist. The two appear together in every radiology tender, and they are often confused.

What a RIS does

A radiology information system manages the department: patient registration, orders, scheduling, billing, and the report as a record. It knows who the patient is and what was requested.

What a PACS does

A picture archiving and communication system receives the images from the modalities, stores them, and shows them to the radiologist in a viewer. It knows what was acquired, and it is where the reading happens.

How they work together

A study crosses between the two several times.

  • The order and the patient identity go from the RIS to the modality as a worklist entry.
  • The modality sends the images to the PACS under that identity.
  • The radiologist reads in the PACS.
  • The status and the report go back to the RIS.

Where Bayan sits

Bayan is the PACS. It connects to the RIS or HIS you already run over HL7 v2, FHIR R4, DICOM Modality Worklist and DICOMweb, with a ready connector for Nixpend. Reports can be written in Bayan or in your RIS: each center chooses.

Questions centers ask

Do we need both a RIS and a PACS?

A center that images patients needs somewhere to keep and read images, which is the PACS. Orders and billing need a RIS or a HIS. Small centers sometimes start with the PACS and add the rest later.

What is a HIS, then?

A hospital information system covers the whole facility. In many hospitals the radiology orders come from the HIS, with or without a separate RIS.

Which standards connect them?

HL7 and FHIR for orders, status and reports, and DICOM for images and the modality worklist.
