DICOMweb, explained in plain words

DICOMweb is DICOM over the web. It lets software search for studies, fetch images and store new ones with ordinary HTTPS requests instead of the older DICOM network protocol.

The three services

Three names cover most of it.

  • QIDO-RS: search for studies, series and images.
  • WADO-RS: retrieve the images and their information.
  • STOW-RS: store new studies.

Why it matters

A viewer in the browser cannot speak the classic DICOM protocol, but it can make web requests. DICOMweb is what lets a radiologist read from any computer with nothing installed, and what lets other software reach the archive in a standard way.

DICOMweb in Bayan

The reading viewer loads studies over DICOMweb, each request checked against what that user may see. Other DICOMweb software can read studies when your center allows it.

Questions centers ask

Does DICOMweb replace DICOM?

No. Modalities still send images with classic DICOM. DICOMweb is how web software reaches them afterwards.

Is DICOMweb secure?

It runs over HTTPS, and access is controlled by the system that offers it. In Bayan every request is authorised.

Can our own software use it?

Yes, when your center allows it, with access limited to what you grant.
